Description: | Hants and Dorset Motor Services and Omnibus Station with large advert for Heinz on wall of bus station. Opposite is the Savoy cinema and Savoy Buildings.
The Savoy was built in 1933 as part of the Savoy Buildings which also comprised shops, a restaurant and businesses. The cinema project cost £25,000 and seated 1,000 people. The first film shown was "Hell Below" with Robert Montgomery. It closed in the late 1950's.
Beyond the bus station leading towards the railway station were many small shops and businesses, many of which survived through the 1930's to the 1950's. There was the Wesleyan Methodist Church, followed by Cripps, which sold fresh fish and is still in business today further along West Street. Then Shepherds, a pork butcher, Jeffery's furniture store, the council offices (which is now Westbury Manor Museum) and the electricity office. Beyond Hartlands Road was Sidney Smith the photographer, Pinks and Murrays Gents Outfitters which was opposite the White Horse. Further up the street was Croker and Farrels Garage, Corbetts Café, Burke's furniture, Hodges cycle shop and the Foresters Hall.
Leading down from the railway station were Arnett's, the fishmonger, Ireson's, a butcher in the 1930's, Stone the grocers, Holloway the newsagent, Force's Suppliers of army gear, Butcher the dentist on the corner of Westbury Alley, Gadsten's the chemist, Woolworths, Dewhurts, a butcher, Taylor's sweet shop, Bata's shoe shop, Timothy White's, Trigg's, a gents outfitters and Neville's the chemist. Many of these businesses lasted for a long time in Fareham and changes to traditional shops only began with the redevelopment of the new shopping centre and its subsequent impact on the smaller shops in West Street.
