Description: | Fareham's first fire station was in the High Street in the 1860's, then in 1888 it moved to Quay Street and in 1910 it moved to a more convenient site in West Street. Here it remained until the 1980's when a new purpose built building was opened at the end of West Street, near the railway station. One of the fire fighting appliances can be seen on the pavement outside. This was the original site of Price's School.
Next door to the Fire Station stands the Parish Church Hall of St Peter and Paul's Church.
On the far side is the Congregational Church and Portland Buildings. The Congregationalists have a long history in Fareham, going back to the 1690's. Under the guidance of the first Pastor, the Rev. Samuel Chandler, a chapel was erected in West Street. In 1836 a new chapel in the Early English style was built mainly due to the efforts of the Rev. G Mudie. It later became the United Reformed Church.
This area has undergone many changes through the years. At one time there were many banks along this part of West Street and from here a lane led down to Melgrade Hall and Melgrade café, by Dorothy Grace, the florist.
