Description: | West Street was for many years known as Fareham's Golden Mile on account of the shops lining it for most of its length from the railway station to High Street.
Among the shops to be seen are Brighter Homes, selling wallpaper and paint, Dodges and Batchelors the chemists.
Albion Dodge & Son was one of the oldest firms in Fareham selling boots and shoes, clothing and haberdashery for over a hundred years. It closed in 1970. Batchelors traded for over two hundred years.
Fareham for many years had many family run and long serving shops. At the bottom end of West Street, many of these long established shops throughout the 1930's to the 1950's included Bizley's newsagents,
Vimpany's jewellers, Silvers, gents outfitters, Suttons stationers, Millbanks the butchers, Radfords, later Days, Stacey's the ironmonger with the Five Arches Youth Club above, the Forge Café at the back of the Kings Arms, George Walters the fishmonger and also a dry cleaners. At the bottom of High Street near the Red Lion was Righton and Bennett garage and Burts the butchers.
