The Armistice celebrations marked the general relief at the end of the First World War. Guns Week in Fareham commenced on Monday 11 November 1918 and coincided with the end of the war. As the news got about, the town was covered in flags and flowers. In the evening an Armistice demonstration was held.
A procession during the day had included three pairs of horsed trollies and other vehicles, decorated with flags and packed with children. Also taking part in the procession were the army, nurses, Girl Guides and Boy Scouts who also provided the drum and fife band. In the evening after the German flag was burnt, a procession was formed headed by the Fire Brigade, followed by an illuminated lorry belonging to Fred Dyke, a prominent local businessman. A great crowd had assembled despite the rain. The principal street lamps had been cleaned owing to the Lights Up order, and the flaming arc lamps, seen for the first time in many months, lit up the scene.
On the next evening the rejoicing continued. There were fireworks, miniature guns were fired and soldiers, civilians and military patients from local hospitals all joined in the celebrations.
