Description: | Titchfield Road is also known as the Avenue. The tollgate on the Fareham to Southampton Road was situated at the west end of the town at the corner of Gudge Heath Lane and the Titchfield Road, the A27. It was called Blackbrook toll house and was owned by the Titchfield and Cosham Trust. It had a weighing machine which stood on the opposite side of the main road. As well as the gate across this road, there were bars across both Gudge Heath Lane and Redlands Lane. In the background the railway bridge can be seen next to the railway station which dates from 1840. Toll gates were a common sight in the 19th century.
