Description: | A panoramic view of West Street shows the length and breadth of the street at this time.
The Town Hall was an early 19th century building and had many names and uses over the years. It was also known as Portland Chambers, the Corn Exchange and Portland Hall. The Town Hall has a billboard outside advertising Of Mice and Men in aid of the Portsmouth Hospital. At this time it was a centre for reading sessions, plays and dances. It held concerts by the Fareham Philharmonic Society and at one time even had a waxworks. The Working Men's Club also apparently met here before moving to Kings Road and then Mill Road. The old machinery for corn hoisting was still in the attic part of the building, where old chests of deeds were also kept. By 1929 shops had appeared on the ground floor.
Beyond the Town Hall is the entrance to the Fareham Cattle Auction Market Sales every Monday at 10.30 am. It was not an uncommon sight to see sheep and cattle being driven through the street. Animals which had been kept in fields in Park Lane and Red Barn Lane could be driven down there and even sold which added considerably to traffic on market day.
Beyond is the Congregational Church. The Congregationalists have a long history in Fareham and can be traced back to the 1690's when a chapel was erected in West Street under the guidance of Pastor Samuel Chandler. The next landmark for the church came in 1835 when a new chapel in Early English style was built, mainly due to the efforts of Rev. G Mudie.
