Description: | Price's School or Price's Charity School was the most prestigious in Fareham. It was the gift to the town of William Price, a wealthy and philanthropic Fareham timber merchant. In his will, dated 1721, Price bequeathed his house in West Street, his estate at Crocker Hill and his farm lands at Elson, Gosport to establish a charity school for 30 poor children of the parish in Price's old home in West Street. The school flourished, supported by an annual allowance of 40 shillings per pupil. Any surplus from the rents on his properties was to be distributed to the poor widows of Fareham. Originally the school taught both girls and boys but was later for boys only. Pupils were known as the Bluecoat Boys because of their blue uniform.
By 1846, Price's old house was dismantled and a new schoolhouse built. From this date, only boys were taught and this building lasted until 1907, when the building in Park Lane, formerly known as Puxol Lane, was opened. The first headmaster was S Bradley, followed by George Ashton. Price's had an excellent academic reputation over the years but declined, at one time being a part of Fareham College before being demolished.
Price's School always had William Price's will displayed on boards by the entrance to the building. The boards were saved when the school was demolished in 1989.
