Description: | Portland Street had many small shops during the 1980's. They included Hadens Carpets, Lotus Chinese takeaway restaurant, pet store, hairdressing salon, Hansfords fishing tackle and horse tack stores, Iron designs shop and a fish and chip shop. On the opposite side of the street were 2 public houses - the Portland and the Toby Jug.
The street lasted a mere 100 years. During the 1930's shops on the street included Clacks, a wine merchant and a beer retailer. These became the Portland and the Toby Jug. Interspersed with the houses were Coopers the confectioners, Evans, the bakers who made his bread using faggots of wood for his oven and Jacksons, a bootmaker. Near the bottom of the street was the Presbytery of the Roman Catholic church of the Sacred Heart and on the other side, Irvine Haley, the timber merchant. Fred Dyke had a blacksmith's shop at No 34. From humble beginnings, Fred Dyke became an important and well known figure in Fareham with a place on the council and an important haulage business.
