Description: | In 1835 there were 36 turnpike roads in Hampshire but by the 1840's roads began to be challenged by the new railways being built. Fareham's busiest turnpike was to the north of the town at the top of North Hill. In winter it was not unknown for passengers to walk up the steep hill to lighten the load for the coaches and James horses.
After the new road to Fareham was opened in 1872, the tollhouse was transferred to the lower end of Old Turnpike on the Wickham Road. The toll house stood on the site now occupied by the Turnpike garage. It was looked after by the Matthews family who also sold refreshments there. The hill to the left is Old Turnpike. To avoid paying the toll, travellers could travel on a roundabout trip through Wallington village on narrow, muddy lanes.
It is probable that it is Dr Case who can be seen in his pony and trap. Dr William Case had commenced practice with Dr James Ainge in Fareham in 1832. Ainge retired in 1838 and William carried on the practice, later joined by his son George. William was a popular figure in the town and was Fareham's Medical Officer. George case took over this position when his father died in 1879, thus carrying on the family tradition.
The buildings on the right of Wickham Road are the old Fareham Workhouse which became St Christopher's Hospital in 1948. It was erected in 1836 to accommodate about 300 paupers but seldom reached this number. A chapel was added in 1849.
