Description: | View looking towards the crossroads.
Havant's third post office (on the left) was built in 1892 at a cost of £706.5s.0d. The Postmaster was Henry Wood and by 1896 he had been succeeded by George Whittle.
The large gas lamp hanging outside cost £10-17d-6d., and the opening times were: weekdays 8am to 8pm and Sundays 7am to 10am.
The Capital and Counties (bank) was next door and the Bank Manager was Peter Mortimer Hooper. The next shop was Frederick J Barnes, Baker and Confectioner, then the Rent Office of Mr. Clarke, and finally on the corner of North Street was Clarke's General store.
On the other corner with East Street is the White Hart public house (pub), built in 1889 when North Street was widened. This had meant that the original pub on this corner, the Millers Arms, was removed and its site was included in the road widening. The original White Hart was also demolished at this time and it had originally stood a bit further up inside East Street.
Path: A pathway was kept swept across the road so the ladies on their way to Church could cross and not get the bottoms of their best dresses dirty. This path can just be seen in this picture.
