Title: Christmas advertisement, 1900s [Go to resource]
Description: Every year Huntley & Palmers would produce new tin designs and the Christmas market was the main focus of these activities. Christmas tins were sold in their own right as desirable items and the rival biscuit firms would compete to produce the most fancy tins. At the turn of the century Huntley & Palmers did not use widespread marketing believing it made their products look cheap and low quality. However rivals like Peek Frean were successfully using media advertising and were increasing their market share at the expense of Huntley & Palmers. This led to the appointment of advertising agents Mather and Crowther to secure good positions for adverts in the press.
