Description: | Huntley & Palmers provided ordinary and specially made emergency biscuits to the ill-fated British Antarctic Expedition to the South Pole, led by Captain Scott. Several varieties of biscuit containers still survive at the Cape Evans hut where Scott had established his winter quarters in 1911. In Captain Scott's day the science of nutrition was in its infancy, and modern research has shown that the daily ration of 4100 calories for the men was 800 calories short. The polar party's diet was deficient not only in vitamins but in energy-producing elements as well. Captain Scott had biscuits specially made by Huntley & Palmers for the Expedition to the following formula: flour 80lbs, rice gluten 13 3/4lbs, wheat meal 20lbs, sugar 7 1/2lbs, lard 2 1/2lbs, salt 10oz, sodium bicarbonate 2 1/2oz, water 40lbs.
