Description: | Seaham Harbour, near Sunderland, was officially opened in 1831, but it was not fully completed until 1845. It was financed by the Marquess of Londonderry, to allow coal to be shipped from his Durham collieries. A new town was built at Seaham to accommodate the harbour workers. The local architect John Dobson created a grand design for the harbour and town. However, due to lack of money, Dobson's plans were never fully completed. In this view, the harbour is packed with collier brigs (two-masted coal ships). | License: | http://www.imagine.org.uk/about/copyright/ | Rights holder: | Tyne & Wear Museums | Subjects: | work living in the North East other North East transport buildings and views art designers men coal mining | Source: | Tyne and Wear Imagine | Identifier: | http://www.imagine.org.uk/details/index.... | Go to resource |
