Description: | Henry Greathead of South Shields built the first true lifeboat in 1790. It was lined with cork so that it was almost unsinkable. The lifeboat was built with funds given by North East people, and the Duke of Northumberland paid for the lifeboat house at North Shields. The lifeboat is shown saving the crew of a ship wrecked near Tynemouth. This print was published by Greathead. | License: | http://www.imagine.org.uk/about/copyright/ | Rights holder: | Tyne & Wear Museums | Subjects: | North Tyneside invention and innovation artists living in the North East events buildings and views emergency services made in the North East men | Source: | Tyne and Wear Imagine | Identifier: | http://www.imagine.org.uk/details/index.... | Go to resource |
