Description: | This print shows an artist's impression of High West Street Wesleyan Chapel and School, Gateshead. This Methodist chapel was built in 1861, and was designed by the North Shields architects Hanwell & Johnson. When the chapel was built, a much simpler round window replaced the window that is shown at the top of the church in this print. The school was built to educate poor children, and was added in 1863. Methodism became popular in Newcastle and Gateshead after John Wesley's visits in the 1740s. The chapel closed in 1979. | License: | http://www.imagine.org.uk/about/copyright/ | Rights holder: | Tyne & Wear Museums | Subjects: | religion living in the North East buildings and views designers children Gateshead education | Source: | Tyne and Wear Imagine | Identifier: | http://www.imagine.org.uk/details/index.... | Go to resource |
