Description: | At the front of this view are the steam locomotive and wagons that transported coal from Rainton Colliery in County Durham to ships at Seaham Harbour. Two miners are standing to the left of the train. Seaham Harbour was begun in 1823, and officially opened in 1831. The harbour, town, colliery and railway were all built for the 3rd Marquess of Londonderry. He also owned other pits in Country Durham. Seaham Railway was one of many North East colliery railways connecting pits to ports. | License: | http://www.imagine.org.uk/about/copyright/ | Rights holder: | Tyne & Wear Museums | Subjects: | work living in the North East other North East transport buildings and views men coal mining | Source: | Tyne and Wear Imagine | Identifier: | http://www.imagine.org.uk/details/index.... | Go to resource |
