Description: | This drilling machine was made in Manchester at the works of Joseph Whitworth who, in the mid 1800s, pioneered new methods of accuracy in engineering manufacture. Whitworth's machine tools were so well made and reliable that many remained in use long after they were obsolete. They were widely used on Tyneside, for example in Armstrong's Elswick Works. | License: | http://www.imagine.org.uk/about/copyright/ | Rights holder: | Tyne & Wear Museums | Subjects: | beyond the North East science and industry | Source: | Tyne and Wear Imagine | Identifier: | http://www.imagine.org.uk/details/index.... | Go to resource |
