Description: | 4th February 1924. Old Tollhouse, junction of Low Road and Pepper Lane. Stone house, windows smashed. Road building and road improvements were carried out in the 18th and 19th centuries by private consortiums or Turnpike Trusts. Tolls would be charged for road use at strategic points. hence the toll houses or toll bars. These charges were abolished in 1870 and toll bars banned from 1873.
