Description: | July 1960.
View of a sunset over Springfield Mills. At this time the mill chimney was still its full height and original design. Steam power was still being generated by coal-fired boilers. Shortly afterwards the mill was converted to burning oil and the chimney adapted for this. Right at the apex of the mill roof, next to the chimney, can be seen the thin, narrow tube of the mill buzzer. Mill buzzers were used to warn employers about the opening times for work. Most of the mills in Morley had a buzzer, each with its own distinctive sound. During the First World War plans were made to use the buzzers, and not sirens in the event of an air raid. In its last usage the Springfield Mill buzzer was blown at 6.55 am. and again at 7.00 am. The entrance to the new housing estate now on the site of Springfield Mills is to the left of the stone terrace on the left.
