Description: | C1838.
Westward view of the Chancel from the Altar of the old Leeds Parish church of St. Peter before re-building between 1837 and 1841. The interior scene was recorded as a watercolour sketch by artist John N. Rhodes (1809-1842). Many unsympathetic alterations over the centuries had done nothing to enhance the original medieval building. As seen in the painting, the organ was positioned in the Chancel in 1714 which meant partially walling up the Chancel arch and altering the proportions. There were too many pews of various styles and dark stairways to ugly galleries. St. Peter's was originally only to be renovated until severe structual defects were revealed which necessitated a major rebuilding project. Robert Chantrell designed the new building and it was decided that only the South wall should be retained. The new Church of St. Peter finally opened in September 1841. | License: | http://www.leodis.net/article.aspx?id=12 | Rights holder: | Leeds Central Library | Subjects: | Leeds Parish Church St. Peter | Source: | Leodis - A photographic archive of Leeds | Identifier: | http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?id=20... | Go to resource |
