Description: | C1838.
This watercolour sketch by John N. Rhodes records the interior of Leeds Parish Church of St. Peter before building work commenced in 1838. It looks North East from the organ screen, which had been erected in the Chancel arch spoiling the proportions of the architecture. There were many instances of unsympathetic alterations across the centuries and these, together with major problems within the structure of the Church, made renovation an impossible task. Apart from the South wall, the Church was entirely rebuilt to designs by architect Robert Chantrell and re-opened in the September of 1841. This series of watercolours of St. Peter's was made in the latter period of John N. Rodes' life when he had returned to live in Leeds from London due to ill health. | License: | http://www.leodis.net/article.aspx?id=12 | Rights holder: | Leeds Central Library | Subjects: | Leeds Parish Church St. Peter's John N Rhodes Robert Chantrell | Source: | Leodis - A photographic archive of Leeds | Identifier: | http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?id=20... | Go to resource |
