Description: | C1838.
This watercolour sketch by John N.Rhodes shows Leeds Parish Church of St. Peter undergoing demolition. The View loos West to the West window. In March of 1838 work began on renovating the existing medieval Church. The structure revealed serious flaws and damage and it was discovered that the fabric of the original building was in a dangerous state. The Building Committee decided that only the South wall would be saved and that the Church would virtually have to be rebuilt. Robert Chantrell was the architect and by the time it opened in September 1841 the work had amounted to costs of ?30,000. In the background a gentleman in top hat surveys the scene of demolition and in the foreground a workman lifts a slab of stone into his wheelbarrow. | License: | http://www.leodis.net/article.aspx?id=12 | Rights holder: | Leeds Central Library | Subjects: | Leeds Parish Church St Peter's John N.
