Description: | View near Bangor in Caerfonshire, Wales. The history of the area dates back to the 6th century when a Celtic missionary, Deiniol, established a monastic community here. Bangor and the surrounding areas were developed in the 18th century when a main route from Dublin to London was built. Previously the main road had been from London to Holyhead passing through Chester, Denbigh and Conwy, across the Lafan Sands to a point opposite Beaumaris, where the passage over the Menai Strait was made by ferry. But in 1718, because of the dangers of the tidal sands, this route was abandoned in favour of Bangor and the Porthaethwy Ferry. | License: | http://www.bl.uk/services/copy/permission.html | Publisher: | Laurie & Whittle | Rights holder: | British Library | Source: | Collect Britain | Creator: | Sanby, Paul | Identifier: | http://www.collectbritain.co.uk/personal... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
