Description: | The prominent position of Castle Cornet can clearly be seen in this picture, situated on a rocky islet at the southern entrance to the harbour, off the coast of Guernsey Island. The castle was built in the early 13th century to protect the island from French invaders. A ledge of rocks in the harbour also acts as a natural defence in the harbour. In the 17th century when this picture was drawn, St Peter Port was relatively small ; it was not until the 18th and 19th century that it grew and became an important trading centre between France and England. | License: | http://www.bl.uk/services/copy/permission.html | Rights holder: | British Library | Source: | Collect Britain | Creator: | [Martin Beckman] | Identifier: | http://www.collectbritain.co.uk/personal... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
