Description: | Coloured plan of Mont Orgueil Castle drawn on a scale of 50 feet to an inch. The castle is situated on a promontory of rock overlooking Grouville Bay in Jersey. This site has been fortified since the Stone Ages and the castle was historically the main fortification on the island and was the centre of Island government and was the residence of the Lords, Keeps and Governors of Jersey. It was perfectly suited to Medieval techniques of warfare as the walls were built out of the rocks forming an almost impregnable barrier, however with the invention of the cannon with more powerful artillery and a longer range, the castle was no longer such a safe refuge. | License: | http://www.bl.uk/services/copy/permission.html | Rights holder: | British Library | Source: | Collect Britain | Identifier: | http://www.collectbritain.co.uk/personal... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
