Description: | A view in ink of the new Sherborne Castle, built by Sir Walter Raleigh and the seat of the Digby family from Raleigh's death to this day. Raleigh had fallen in love with the original 12th-century castle when he saw it in the 16th century, and persuaded Queen Elizabeth to have the Church relinquish it to the Crown. He was given a 99-year lease by Elizabeth and tried to modernise the castle, but eventually decided to construct a new building on the site of the old deer-hunting lodge in the castle grounds. Raleigh lived in this new house for little more than ten years before his execution for treason. | License: | http://www.bl.uk/services/copy/permission.html | Rights holder: | British Library | Source: | Collect Britain | Creator: | Grimm, Samuel Hieronymus | Identifier: | http://www.collectbritain.co.uk/personal... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
