Description: | Penrhyn Castle occupies the site of a previous 12th-century castle. It was built in 1820 by Thomas Hopper for the wealthy Pennant family, who had made their money from Jamaican sugar and Welsh slate. Hopper designed it in the neo-Norman style including the interiors which contained mock-Norman furniture and elaborate carvings. The enormous castle was decorated lavishly to reflect the wealth of its occupants and boasted fine collections of art, and even a one-ton slate bed designed for Queen Victoria. The gardens covered more than 45 acres and maintained an array of exotic flora from around the world. | License: | http://www.bl.uk/services/copy/permission.html | Rights holder: | British Library | Source: | Collect Britain | Creator: | Buckler, John Chessell | Identifier: | http://www.collectbritain.co.uk/personal... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
