Description: | "Oban, the great rendezvous of tourists in the West Highlands, encircles the sweep of a spacious bay, which is said to have capacity and anchorage for upwards of three hundred sail of merchant vessels. It has risen mainly since the beginning of the present century, under the influence of the Duke of Argyle and Sir Angus Campbell. In the summer season Oban assumes a very busy appearance - the Messrs. Hutcheson & Co.'s admirable steamers bringing numerous tourists, who generally make a halt in their journey to inspect the ruins of Donolly Castle, Dunstaffnage Castle, and other beauties of the place. It has ample accommodation for tourists, being provided with three first-class hotels - the Great Western, Caledonian, and Craig-Ard - each of which are conducted in such a way as to insure the comfort of those who may patronise them. It has also a weekly newspaper, under the able management of Mr. Miller. Being situated near the opening of Loch Linnhe, in connection with the Caledonian Canal, it is admirably adapted for trade, and is rapidly rising into importance."
