Description: | Reproductions of Irish High Crosses in the nave of the Crystal Palace in Sydenham Hill. These form part of the Celtic Cross tradition but are unique for their combination of circle and cross, suggesting a melding of sun-worship with early Christianity. The Crystal Palace was designed by Joseph Paxton to house the Great Exhibition of 1851, a showcase for British arts and industries, held in Hyde Park. Afterwards, it was dismantled and rebuilt at the south-east London site where it housed a national centre of entertainment and enlightenment for the British public until it was destroyed by fire in 1936. | License: | http://www.bl.uk/services/copy/permission.html | Publisher: | The Photographic Institution | Rights holder: | British Library | Subjects: | Art Cartography And Topography Sacred Architecture Sculpture Leisure And The Arts Archaeology Architecture Ancient World Monuments Attractions Trade And Economics Industry | Source: | Collect Britain | Creator: | Delamotte, Philip Henry (1820 - 1889) | Identifier: | http://www.collectbritain.co.uk/personal... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
