Description: | Photograph of a the doorway to the 'Amrita' cave taken by Joseph David Beglar in the 1870s. At Udaygiri in the modern state of Madhya Pradesh there are about twenty rock cut caves dating to the Gupta period. Most are just niches however some form columned temples. This view gives a head-on view of the doorway of Cave 19 (mid-5th Century), showing the sculptural details on the architraves. There are figures of Ganga and Yamuna on the sides with miniature figures and foliation motifs. A frieze depicting the myth of the churning of the milk ocean by the gods and demons to obtain the amrita, or the elixir of immortality, is carved over the lintel. Inside Cave 19 stand a number of lingas and a Nandi image indicating that the cave is Shaivite. | License: | http://www.bl.uk/services/copy/permission.html | Rights holder: | British Library | Subjects: | Art Temples Sacred Architecture Sculpture Caves Leisure And The Arts Architecture Rock-Cut Temples | Source: | Collect Britain | Creator: | Beglar, Joseph David | Identifier: | http://www.collectbritain.co.uk/personal... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
