Description: | Photograph of the sculptured mouldings on east doorway of Kashivishveshvara Temple, Lakkundi taken by Henry Cousens in the 1880s. Lakkundi is situated in the modern state of Karnataka. The Kashivishveshvara Temple was built in the late Chalukya style and dates to the 12th Century. It is a Hindu shrine and is also known as the Kashivishvanatha temple. The doorways are decorated with bands of scroll-work along the jambs and figures of divinities at the base. Henry Cousens wrote: "Though the south doorway is the finer one of the two, the eastern has even more delicate work upon it. In this one some of the bands have been so undercut as to leave ribbons of perforated filigree work the fine tracery of which is accentuated by the black shadows of the innumerable interstices between. How the tool was worked through these small holes to remove the background is marvellous: it must have required the very utmost effort of patience." | License: | http://www.bl.uk/services/copy/permission.html | Rights holder: | British Library | Subjects: | Art Hindu Temples Temples Sacred Architecture Sculpture Leisure And The Arts Architecture | Source: | Collect Britain | Creator: | Cousens, Henry | Identifier: | http://www.collectbritain.co.uk/personal... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
