Description: | Photograph of a small sculpture group from above the shrine door of the Kashivishveshvara Temple, Lakkundi taken by Henry Cousens in the 1880s. Lakkundi is situated in the modern state of Karnataka. The Kashivishveshvara Temple was built in the late Chalukya style and dates to the 12th Century. It is a Hindu shrine and is also known as the Kashivishvanatha temple. The pieces shown in this photograph are damaged but represent a horseman and other figures. Henry Cousens wrote: "The shrine doorway, within, rivals the exterior one in point of finish...Upon the cornice are groups of men and animals in procession, among which, in the middle, is a horseman with head and shoulders broken off, preceded by musicians. The action and contour of both horse and man are very good...The group is not more than six inches high, and is cut in very bold relief, in fact it is almost detached from the cornice..." | License: | http://www.bl.uk/services/copy/permission.html | Rights holder: | British Library | Subjects: | Art Hindu Temples Temples Sacred Architecture Sculpture Leisure And The Arts Architecture | Source: | Collect Britain | Creator: | Cousens, Henry | Identifier: | http://www.collectbritain.co.uk/personal... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
