Description: | Photograph of the sculptured facade of the Mallikarjuna Temple at Kuruvatti in Karnataka, taken by William Henry Pigou, c. 1857, from 'Architecture in Dharwar and Mysore'. This large temple, dedicated to Shiva, was built in the Late Chalukya style of the Deccan, towards the end of the 10th century. It consists of a sanctuary with a closed hall or mandapa and three porches. The sculptured wall-panels that decorate the exterior are very finely executed. They consist of niches carved in relief covered by miniature temple towers with elaborate ornamentation. In the niches are sculptures of deities. This view shows the sculpture in the southern niche, which probably represents Bhairava. | License: | http://www.bl.uk/services/copy/permission.html | Publisher: | John Murray | Rights holder: | British Library | Subjects: | Hindu Temples | Source: | Collect Britain | Creator: | Pigou, William Henry | Identifier: | http://www.collectbritain.co.uk/personal... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
