Description: | The museum holds a large collection of over 30,000 manuscripts of verse and prose by William Wordsworth, Dorothy Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Thomas De Quincey. It includes original manuscripts of Wordsworth's poems, including his greatest work, 'The Prelude' and original manuscripts of Dorothy Wordsworth's famous 'Grasmere Journals.'
There is also a collection of letters associated with the major Romantic figures including William & Dorothy Wordsworth (700 letters), Coleridge, De Quincey, Robert Southey, Sir George Beaumont, Benjamin Robert Haydon, Lord Byron, Charles Lamb and also the Mary Wordsworth archive.
There is also a collection of 700 items of financial and family papers belonging to the Wordsworth family and Mary Hutchinson's family papers plus papers of related families (Calvert, Coleridge, Wordsworth, Arnold, Benson and Spedding).
Autograph collections include those of Dora Wordsworth, Rotha and Jemima Quillinan and Mary Stanger (featuring 18th-19th century figures).
There are also working papers of scholars such as Ernest De Selincourt, Helen Darbishire, Gordon Graham, Wordsworth, Mary Moorman, James Dykes Campbell, John Alban Finch and Donald Sewell.
Printed material such as books and pamphlets number around 7,000 items and include the library of Wordsworth, with many works formally belonging to Coleridge or Southey and some annotated. There are also lifetime editions from the Romantic Period, with near complete and significant collections from writers such as Wordsworth, De Quincey, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, Keats, Sir Walter Scott, William Godwin, Mary Wollstonecroft, Leigh Hunt, Charles Lamb, Mary Lamb, William Hazlitt, Polidori, Caroline Lamb, Ann Radcliffe and Felicia Hemans. There is also a large group of books related to the illustrated Ancient Mariner.
