Description: | The Coins and Medals Department of the Fitzwilliam Museum curates approximately 6,000 examples of paper money. The collection includes paper money from all over the world, from the very first Chinese and Oriental banknotes in the thirteenth century to the colonial and ÃCo-Prosperity SphereÃ' banknotes of the mid-twentieth century. Modern and contemporary banknotes are also represented in the collections.
During the last decade credit cards and telephone cards have become increasingly popular and are now held for numismatic study in the same way as tokens and jetons: as historically significant and collectable alternative forms of currency and credit. The Fitzwilliam Museum currently holds around 150 cards although this area may increase in prominence as the way cards are used changes over time. | Subjects: | Numismatics Telephone Money Credit | Source: | Cornucopia - Discovering UK Collections | FAX: | 01223 332 923 | Telephone: | 01223 332 900 | Identifier: | oai:www.cornucopia.org.uk:8391 | Go to resource |
