Oil and Contemporary Collection
The oil collectionhas about 1300 works of Western European art from c1500 with Old Master paintings on show at the Temple Newsam and Lotherton. There are 19th century British and French works but Leeds has rich holdings of 20th century British art acquired from living artists over the last hundred years. Paintings and sculpture dominate this collection, but artists are looking at the possibilities offered by new media such as video, DVD, and the digital manipulation of images. New additions include DVD works by Mark Wallinger, Mark Dean and Annelies Strba and a sound work by Tacita Dean.
Victorian material - Colonel T. Walter Harding bought paintings such as Lady Butler's 'Scotland for Ever!', Lord Leighton's 'Return of Persephone' and presented them. Other notable early acquisitions include Tissot's 'The Bridesmaid', Waterhouse's 'Lady of Shalott' and Grimshaw's 'Nightfall Down the Thames', 'The Village Funeral' by Frank Holl, and Holman Hunt's 'Shadow of Death'. Another collection was The Sam Wilson collection of paintings, sculpture, pastels, furniture and ceramics, focused on modern British painting or 'English Impressionism'. Wilson bought pictures for his home in Leeds at Rutland Lodge, Potternewton and iIn 1915 he bequeathed his collection including works by Orpen, Clausen, Senior, Knight and Georg Sauter and Brangwyn panels from the Venice Biennale in 1905.

The Gallery with the help of the Henry Moore Foundation has created a major collection of sculpture which is second only to that of the Tate including works by Rodin, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Alexander Calder, Anthony Gormley, Alison Wilding and Bill Woodrow.
