This work and Plompton Rocks with Two Boats on the Lake were commissioned from the youngTurner by Edward Lascelles, later 1st Earl of Harewood. The artist made studiesfor the two oil paintings on his visit to Harewood in 1797. He was paid ã32.9s.0dfor both plus 19 guineas for the case to transport them in, in 1798. These werecommissioned to fill the spaces left by two doors which had recently beenremoved.

The sitter, Seymour Dorothy Fleming, married Sir Richard Worsley in 1775. She wears a red ridinghabit adapted from the uniform of her husband's regiment, the Hampshire Militia. The companion portrait of her husband in uniform belongs to the Earl ofYarborough at Brockelsbury Park. Two years after this portrait was exhibited at the Royal Academy, Sir Richard sensationally divorced his wife on the grounds ofher criminal conversation with one of his officers. He failed to pay for his wife's portrait and eventually Reynolds appears to have given it away to LadyWorsley's step-father Edwin Lascelles.

Anne, elder daughter of William Chaloner of Guisborough, Yorkshire, married Edward Lascelles, later 1st Earl of Harewood in1761. This portrait was painted to celebrate the birth of their daughter Frances born in 1762. The sitter's pose and the gesture of the child's raised arms isinspired by an engraving by Giovanni Battista Franco of the Virgin and Child and St John, c.1550.

This portrait was presented to the 3rd Earl of Harewood in 1855 by histenants. Louisa was the second daughter of the 2nd Marquess of Bath and marriedthe 3rd Earl of Harewood in 1823. She employed Sir Charles Barry, architect ofthe Houses of Parliament to modernise the house. One of the major changes Barrymade was to add the Italianate Terrace to the South side of the House. Renownedfor his chalk drawings this is an unusual full length oil canvas.

The sitter, Mary Chaloner, was the sister-in-law of Edward Lascelles,later 1st Earl of Harewood. This spectacular portrait was commissioned and paidfor by Edwin Lascelles; two instalments of ã150 guineas in 1770 and 1773.The painting was probably executed however in 1764-6. She is shown as'Euphrosyne' ('Good cheer') one of the Three Graces, the companions of Venus.The pose may have been inspired by a print after Raphael's St Margaret in theLouvre, Paris. She was the wife of Colonel Hale of the Light Horse, laterGeneral Hale.
