Description: | The Walker holds a wide-ranging collection of fine art, the principal groups comprising internationally important Italian and Netherlandish mid 14th to mid 16th century paintings and later foreign art (1550-1900) including works by Rembrandt, Rubens, Poussin and Degas. There are also smaller, domestic 17th century Dutch and Flemish portraits, landscapes and character studies. Works also include those by Rubens, Teniers the younger and an early Rembrandt self-portrait. Dutch landscapes from the seventeenth century onwards include 'View of Dordrecht' by van Goyen and work by Poussin's contemporaries. There are 18th and 19th century watercolours by artists such as Turner and Peter de Wint and the gallery is also the major repository for Victorian works. There is a unique collection of George Romney cartoons and major 20th century works by artists such as Paul Nash, Edward Wandsworth and Eric Ravilious, together with works by Lucian Freud, Gilbert & George and Michael Raedecker purchased from the Liverpool John Moores Exhibition.
Of particular importance are the 17th century European Art collections, which include large religious works such as 'Virgin and Child in Glory' by Murillo, a formal portrait of Charles II and a notable selection of landscapes including 'Landscape with the ashes of Phocion' by Nicholas Poussin.
The Pre-Raphaelite paintings are of worldwide significance and have developed through Liverpool's association with its own school of Pre-Raphaelite artists and the acquisition interests of its wealthy merchants and industrialists.
The museum also shares an important group of 5,000 items of sculpture with the Liverpool Museum containing late antique and early Christian ivories from the Mayer collection and a collection of classical sculpture from the Ince Blundell donation of 1959. These groups of material are among the best in quality, both nationally and internationally. | Subjects: | Sculpture Paintings Fine Art | Source: | Cornucopia - Discovering UK Collections | Address: | William Brown Street
