Description: | The fine art collections were founded through donations in 1898 and were displayed in the Art Gallery until its recent closure and replacement by the new Touchstones galleries. The collections comprise paintings (around 700), drawings, prints and sculpture by local, national and some international artists and include 20th century modernist paintings by artists such as Spencer, Sickert and Pissaro. The collection of 16th & 17th century Old Master paintings from Europe includes works attributed to artists such as Giovanni di Poala, Lucas Cranach (follower of Murillo), William van Aelst, Morales and Francois Clouet. Artists Edward Stott and John Collier feature strongly in the works by local artists. Key bequests in the early 20th century include those by Thomas Kay (northern and Italian Renaissance paintings), Robert Taylor Heape (Victorian paintings), Richard Heape (19th century watercolours) and Royds (19th century pen and ink illustrations). The Contemporary Art Society has contributed a significant number of 20th century works. | Subjects: | Fine Art | Source: | Cornucopia - Discovering UK Collections | Address: | Arts and Heritage Centre
