Description: | -The social history collections represents the everyday life and work of the people of Luton and Bedfordshire from the mid 18th century and includes examples from local trades and industries, transport, domestic and personal life, needlework tools and equipment, kitchen and household equipment , 19th and 20th century toys and dolls.;People have been making hats in and around Luton for over 300 years, a heritage which is reflected in the collections. They consist of examples made in felt, straw plait and other materials including cellophane, from Luton and the south east midlands, Europe,Asia and South America. The collection is particularly strong in women's hats. There is also a supporting collection of hat blocks, hat sewing machines and other equipment.;The lace collection includes bobbin, needle and other laces of the 16th to 20th centuries from Great Britain and Europe, together with a significant collection of lace making equipment.;Collection of late 17th to early 19th century straw marquetry;
