Description: | One of the strengths of this collection is that it is comprehensively representative of coins made or used in Wiltshire from the iron age onwards. It is also wide ranging, including coins, tokens, medallions, banknotes and related items either issued in Wiltshire or which refer to Wiltshire people or places.
There are major Roman coin hoards and assemblages of coins from the Roman towns of Cunetio (Mildenhall) and Durocornovium (Wanborough), as well as individual coins or groups of coins.
The recently discovered nationally-important hoard of coins of the Anarchy period from Box is represented by 20 coins.
The collection of 17th century Wiltshire trade tokens is the most comprehensive in existence. There are also later tokens, jettons, and a collection of Wiltshire medallions, and of medallions and badges depicting Stonehenge.
Finally, the collection includes banknote printing plates, banknote watermark equipment, dies for striking medals and a sculptor's design for a medal.
This major collection relates specifically to Wiltshire and is linked closely to the archaeology and social history collections. | Subjects: | Coins & Medals Numismatics | Source: | Cornucopia - Discovering UK Collections | Address: | 41 Long Street
