Description: | The buttons collection contains some 3000 items from the late 18th. and early 19th.C. The Luckcock collection is of material produced as samples for European courts, including examples with insets of Wedgwood Jasper ware, and buttons made from gilt, pearl, glass, enamel, horn and buttons with inlays of sequins. The Gaunt collection is of military buttons.
The Pinto collection of treen is of world-wide significance and includes some 8000 wooden objects of mainly British or European origin. Artefacts are related to eating and drinking, tobacco and snuff, fire and lighting, toys, games and many other aspects of daily life. Many woodworking techniques are illustrated, including pyrography, veneering, carving and turning.
The W.N.A. Thompson postal history collection provides a unique record of Birmingham's postal system, with a comprehensive series of local postmarks and covers from the late 18th.C. to the 1960s.
The Evans collection of postage stamps includes nearly 50000 examples, mainly from Britain and Europe. The collection was built up over a period of 50 years, and is generally considered to be one of the best general collections in public ownership. It was bequeathed to the City in 1938.
The papier mache, tortoisshell and toy trades were central features of life and industry in Birmingham.
The collection of domestic and business equipment from the former Museum of Science and Industry is of particular interest in making the connection between manufacturing industry and daily life.
The collections cover most aspects of the history of the people and the City from about 1500 to the present day. They are strong in their coverage of political and community life, trades and industries (including the button, papier mache, tortoiseshell and toy trades), domestic life and personalia (relating for example to Matthew Boulton, Joseph Priestley, and the Chamberlain family).
There are also some specific collections of particular interest, such as the Pinto Collection of Treen, and the W.N.A.Thompson postal History collection.
The collections of the former Museum of Science and Industry include significant social history material, including domestic and business equipment from the mid. 18th. century to modern times.
