Description: | The social history collection is strong because of its local associations with Bristol and its hinterland. The collection covers community, working and domestic life and personal effects.
The domestic collection is exceptional representing a valuable resource for the study of home life. It is especially strong in West Country items. The collection includes the country's largest collection of cooking utensils - the Elton collectionof West Country hearth furniture; the Fripp collection of domestic metalwork; and the Carlise collection of treen. There are also household textiles such as quilts; dolls and dolls houses and their furniture; children's games; and keys and locks from the 15th to 19th centuries.
Community life objects include Friendly Society brasses from Bristol, Somerset and Gloucestershire; Guild and Trade Union banners; weights and measures; artefacts relating to law and order and education; and civic regalia.
Working life items are typified by craft tools, for example for woodworking; leather working and blacksmithing.
