Description: | The transport collection from the former Museum of Science and Industry includes two WW II fighter aircraft, a motor car collection which includes the Railton Mobil Special, world land speed record holder from 1938 to 1963 (and presented to the museum by the Dunlop Company, who made the tyres), several rail locomotives, the oldest surviving canal boat with its original (diesel) engine, and a Birminham tram. The large exhibits are supported in most areas by substantial collections of related small-scale material and ephemera.
The road transport collection includes several steam traction engines and rollers, and a variety of Birmingham-made cars and supporting material, tools and equipment. The motorcycles collection provides an extensive range of mainly locally-made examples, and the pedal cycle collection includes some non-British material.
The collection also includes the Railton Land Speed Record car which set records in 1939 and 1947.
There are six railway locomotives of varying size, and a large gifted collection of railway-related material. Many of the items in the engineeering models collection are also railway-related.
The collection also includes a Birmingham tram and related ephemera.
