Description: | "An archive of documentary photographs built up since 1969
by the film and photography collective Amber, The Side
Collection contains more than 7,000 images, divided between over
200 bodies of work. In the early days, it was comprised largely
of work by photographers in the collective, but in 1977, Amber
bought its Newcastle Quayside premises and opened Side Gallery:
its demands and possibilities led to the expansion. Amber's
continuing documentation of the North of England has always been
at the heart of the collection, but in the late 70s and
throughout the 80s, it was frequently as easy to buy work for
gallery exhibitions as it was to hire it. Many photographers,
sympathetic to the gallery's aims and seeing the value of such a
collection, loaned work or entered into shared ownership
agreements. Some work has been donated or left to Amber. The
collection breaks down into four basic categories: 1. The
documentation of the North since 1969 - work by Sirkka-Liisa
Konttinen, Graham Smith, Tish Murtha, Martine Franck, Chris
Killip, Isabella Jedrzejczyk, Peter Fryer, John Davies, Bruce
Rae, Richard Grassick, Keith Pattison, Dean Chapman and many
others. 2. Historical documentations from the North of England,
including that by working class photographers looking their own
communities (Mary Gillens' portrait of Wheatley Hill in Durham,
Jimmy Forsyth's images from Scotswood and Elswick in Newcastle,
Albert Smith's work from Teesside) and bodies of work such The
Building of the Tyne Bridge and The Mauretania; 3. International
contemporary work in the tradition of the concerned photographer
- by Gilles Perres, Graciela Iturbide, Eugene Richards, Abbas,
Susan Meiselas, Chris Steele-Perkins and many more, including
Peter Fryer, Dean Chapman, and others also involved in the
Northern England work; 4. Classic documentary photographs,
including a complete archive of Weegee's images and extensive
collections of work by Martin Chambi, Robert Doisneau, August
Sander, Russell Lee and Lewis Hine. Where photographers or their
estates have given permission, or where Side Gallery owns the
rights, selections have been made for these virtual galleries.
Side regularly draws on its collection for its programme of
