A HELP TO VICTORY ON EMPIRE DAY from the Boys and Girls of the Empire Hereunder are inscribed the names of the scholars of this school who have contributed to the Over-Seas Club's Empire Day 1917 Appeal, on behalf of our brave Soldiers and Sailors fighting at the Front. Since the outbreak of War the School Children of the Empire have contributed over 5,000,000 pennies, enabling the Over-Seas Club to send more than 400,000 parcels of Tobacco, Cigarettes, and other greatly needed comforts to the fearless Soldiers who are driving back the enemy, and to the gallant Sailors who are keeping steadfast watch on the submarine and mine-infested seas. This is a splendid tribute to the interest and pride with which the rising generation is watching the splendid exploits of the heroes who are fighting for the honour of our glorious Empire and the freedom of civilization. ROLL OF HONOUR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE ORDER Instituted for the purpose of recognising the distinguished services of Officers of the Naval and Military Services of the Empire, who have been specially recommended in Despatches. DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL This medal is in lieu of that 'For Meritorious Service.' which had previously been issued as a reward for distinguished gallantry. Either a gratuity of £20 is given on discharge, or an increase of pension of 6d. a day. VICTORIA CROSS The Victoria Cross was instituted during the Crimea War, 1856, for the purpose of rewarding individual officers and men of the Army and Navy who might, in the presence of the enemy, perform some signal act of valour, or devotion to their Country. (The Naval Cross having a blue ribbon). THE MILITARY MEDAL Instituted by King George in 1916, as a reward to non-commissioned officers and men in recognition of bravery in the field. It is worn immediately before al war medals. THE MILITARY CROSS Instituted in 1914. Is entirely a military decoration conferred on captains and officers of lower grades, and warrant officers of the Army, Indian Army, or Colonial Forces. IMPORTANT The Head teacher is courteously requested to forward the sum collected in this school to the Hon. Secretary, Over-Seas Club, General Buildings, Aldwych, W.C. 2, and to make use of the accompanying remittance form when doing so. A specially designed form of receipt will then be forwarded to be affixed on this space, so that the whole will form a pleasing and permanent memento of the share taken by the Scholars in helping our fighting-men on to Victory in 1917.
