Le Trésorier: J. Les Membres du Comité: [a list of Committee members follows] LE PAPIER - PARIS [Day organized at the government's initiative in aid of Charities offering Assistance to the African Army and Colonial Troops. On the forever unforgettable day of mobilisation, when the gun and the tocsin called all Frenchmen to arms for the defence of their country, the troops of North Africa, West and East Africa, Madagascar and La Réunion, Indo-China, the West Indies and Guiana, Tahiti and New Caledonia, moved by the purest and most ardent patriotism, hastened to support the holiest of causes, the defence of the greatest legal entity that exists in the world, as our illustrious Gambetta had proclaimed it to be, immortal France. Zouaves, Algerian, Tunisian and Moroccan infantrymen, African light cavalry, colonial troops, Senegalese, Madagascan and Somali infantrymen, soldiers from the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the seas of China and the Pacific, all, worthy emulators of their illustrious predecessors whose incomparable gallantry has become legendary, were eager to prove to the world that having received from the hands of France the benefits of freedom and civilisation, they wanted to conquer or die at the forefront alongside their elder brothers. In a hundred combats, they have attested both their courage and their heroism: on the Marne, the Yser, in Picardy, in Artois, in Champagne, at Verdun, at Douaumont, at Vaux, on the Somme, on the Aisne, in the Orient. Nothing could stop their irresistible impetus. The great dead of former times, the Zouaves and the Turcos of the Alma and Inkermann, Magenta, Solférino, Reichshoffen, the African light cavalry of the sublime onslaught on Sedan, the Colonials of Bazeilles, the brilliant battalions of the Senegalese infantry and the Foreign Legion, who in thousands of battles have safeguarded France's magnificent colonial empire, all rise in front of the heroes of the Great War and call out to them - 'You too, you have deserved well of your country. Thank you.' The Government of the Republic has considered it a duty to ask France and its Colonies to bestow on these incomparable soldiers the tribute of its admiration and its gratitude. The Committee set up to organize a Day in Aid of Charities providing Colonial Assistance addresses a warm appeal to all Frenchmen, to all Colonials, to all foreigners who are friends of France. May the mothers, widows and children of the heroes who have fallen and the families of the heroes who are continuing the great battle really know that generous France will preserve its love and its gratitude towards them for ever.
