Description: | Acquisition: unknown source, 1806-1840? Description: Whole length, standing facing viewer; head turned slightly to right; long grey wig falling over shoulders; square bands; scarlet and miniver judge's robes held in round waist with black sash tied with a bow in front; black object, perhaps a cap, hanging from it on his right side. his right hand on hip, his left points to two books on a blue velvet covered table to right, the top volume inscribed in black ink along top edge of pages 'A[illegible]', the lower volume inscribed in partially legible Greek lettering on spine; red and white tiled floor, architectural background, with whole-length sculpture of female figure of Justice holding inverted sword in niche to right. 'Not in the [Bodleian Picture] Gallery till between 1806 and 1840; perhaps given with the portrait of Sir William Dolben in 1818. A three-quarters length portrait resembling this in Christ Church.' (Lane Poole, I, pp.87-88, no.218) The portrait does not appear in lists of portraits in the Picture Gallery that were compiled by Anthony Wood, Thomas Hearne, John Gutch, and George Vertue, nor does it appear under the name of sitter or artist in the index of Minutes of the University's Hebdomadal Board, 1738-1754, or those of the Hebdomadal Council (1754-1869). The portrait was moved to the Examination Schools in 1923 when iIt was resolved further that the Curators gratefully accept the offer of the Curators of the Bodleian to present to the Schools two portraits of eminent lawyers, viz Lord Raymond and Sir Gilbert Dolben.' (Minutes of the Curators of the Schools 1914-[1952], 9 Feb 1923, Oxford University Archives, ES/1/1/2, p.49) The books perhaps refer to assistance given by Dolben to Dryden in translating the works of Virgil.
