Description: | Acquisition: unknown source, before 1705 Description: Whole length, standing to right; dark brown hair, moustache and pointed beard; deep falling ruff and lace-edged cuffs; black mantle with badge of the Order of the Garter below his left shoulder; black doublet slashed with gold, breeches, and stockings, gold sword belt; white slashed leather shoes with large black rosettes; an oval gold ornament (probably the lesser George of the Garter), and a gold ring, suspended from a green ribbon around his neck; his right hand holds Lord Chamberlain's wand, his left fur-lined brown leather gloves; broad brimmed black hat with beaded gold band on table to right; red and white tiled floor, red curtain background. In her catalogue of Oxford portraits, Mrs Lane Poole recorded in the entry for this portrait that it was in the possession of the University before 1705, noting, however, that it was 'perhaps an early-nineteenth century copy of an older picture'. (R. Lane Poole, Catalogue of Portraits in the possession of the University, Colleges, City, and County of Oxford, 3 vols, 1912, 1925, I, p.37, no.89). In his translation of Anthony à Wood's Historia et antiquitates universitatis Oxoniensis 2 vols (1684), John Gutch included in his list of portraits in the Picture Gallery of the Bodleian Library 'William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke &c. Chancellor of the University Jan. 29, 1616 to the time of his death Apr. 10, 1630 aet. 50. Whole length, standing, in a black dress, with George, and Garter, and white wand. By V. Dyck.' (J. Gutch, History and Antiquities of the University of Oxford, 2 vols, 1792-96, II, p.957, no.IV). The portrait appears in the first section of the list which includes 'Portraits, &c. presented to the University to be deposited in these Galleries [during] our Author's time' (ibid, p.961) This suggests that the portrait had been presented either before the publication of Wood's Historia ... in 1684, or before his death in 1695. The first paper in the first volume of Thomas Hearne's manuscript collections includes 'A List of the Pictures in the Gallery of the Publick Library at Oxford', dated 1705 [shelfmark?]. The list includes 'William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke.' (A letter, containing an account of some antiquities between Windsor and Oxford1708, reprinted 1725, no.34), and was probably the source of Mrs Lane Poole's acquisition date of 'before 1705'. A portrait of the 'Earl of Pembroke Chancellor of the University' is listed in George Vertue's 'Catalog of the Pictures in the picture Gallery adjoyning to the Bodleian Library' included in a commonplace book compiled between 1741 and 1752 (G. Vertue, 'Note Books' V, Walpole Society, XXVI, 1938, p.16). 'Acta, 8 May 1926, "[I]t was resolved, on a division, to transfer the large portrait of the Earl of Pembroke " ' ( 'Transfers of portraits etc. to the Examination Schools. 1909-[1949]', Bodleian Library Records, d.1183, Bodleian Library) 'Read a letter from the Bodleian Librarian (Dr Cowley) offering the Schools Curators a portrait of the Earl of Pembroke, Chancellor of the University ... It was resolved that the offer be accepted, and that the picture ... be placed in [a] suitable position ... in the Examination Schools.' (Minutes of the Curators of the Schools, 1914-[1952], 15 June 1926, Bodleian Library, ES/1/1/2, fol. 78) External Link: Oxford Portraits website | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: after Daniel Mytens | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=913... | Go to resource |
