Description: | Bronze figure of Prince Llewelyn with coronet and full armour stands holding sword and shield. Statue painted grey, gold and red. Standing on fluted Corinthian column of Corsehill stone with limestone pedestal and painted bronze Corinthian capital. Additional Information: Llywelyn ap Iorwerth (or Llywelyn the Great or Llywelyn I) (1173-1240) may have been born at Dolwyddelan in Gwynedd. He was probably brought up in Powys under the protection of his maternal relatives as the infant may have been a potential menace to the power of his father's half-brothers in Gwynedd. Between 1199 and 1203 he restored the undivided sovereignty of his grandfather (Owain Gwynedd) over the whole of Gwynedd. Relations with the English crown were stable with the marriage of Llywelyn to Joan, King John's natural daughter, in 1205 although broke down in 1210 with a series of military skirmishes in Wales. Llywelyn was able to secure his own position among his fellow princes in Wales and after 1216 was never seriously threatened. Described as a great feudal magnate 'for Llywelyn's policy was conceived within the limitations imposed by obligations of homage to the English crown, he envisaged Wales as a feudal principality on the same model as the Scottish monarchy.' He died in April 1240 and was buried in the abbey at Aberconwy. | Subjects: | Drinking Fountain | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Sculptor: Griffiths, E.O.
